What We Recommend
- Pumps: A variable speed pump sized to your pool’s plumbing. Our pick is the Jandy FloPro variable speed pump. It’s quiet, easy to service and uses less energy than a single speed pump.
- Filters: We prefer DE filters for their filtering and easy backwashing. Our favorite is the Jandy DEV DE filter with the Jandy Neverlube backwash valve.
- Heaters: Heat pumps struggle in our cool spring and fall weather. For a longer season, we recommend a propane or natural gas heater like the Jandy JXi.
- Automatic Cleaners: We like pressure-side cleaners with a booster pump. Our pick is the Polaris TR35P with a Polaris PB4-SQ booster pump.
- Salt Systems: Salt pools are still chlorine pools, with softer-feeling water and fewer chlorine sticks. We recommend the Jandy TruClear or the Jandy AquaPure.
- Copper/Silver Ionizers: The Caribbean Clear system adds copper and silver ions to fight algae and bacteria, so far less chlorine is needed.
- Greener Options: Variable speed pumps and LED pool lights both cut energy use.

Heat pumps cost less to run day to day, but they work poorly in our cool early spring and late fall. If you want a longer season, we recommend a propane or natural gas heater.
Check the pressure gauge. When it reads 10 PSI higher than it did with a clean filter, it’s time to backwash a sand or DE filter or clean a cartridge.
